What is Cleopatra?

Cleopatra is a movie made in 1999, originally for television, but it was such a hit that it was put out on video. There are many movies based on the Queen of Egypt but there is something about this particular movie that makes it oh-so much better than all the rest. Perhaps it's because starring actress Leonor Varela brought the role of Cleopatra to a whole new level. Perhaps it's because the movie was based on Margaret George's book called Memoirs of Cleopatra. Or perhaps it's because of the way they show Cleopatra in a new light. I'm not sure what it is, but there is something there. Billy Zane, best known for his role in Titanic, plays Marc Anthony, one of Caesar's most loyal men. And then we have the man who played Julius Caesar; Timothy Dalton. He plays a very convincing Caesar! Most everyone knows the story of Cleopatra, but just in case you may have forgotten, please allow me to give you a quick refresh of the memory. Cleopatra was a seventeen year old Queen of Egypt, who ruled as the last Pharoah of Egypt for twenty-two years. Egypt is in debt to Rome, and had been for a very long time, and Caesar came to Egypt to make sure these debts are being paid. This is when Cleopatra and Caesar meet, and Cleopatra is named Queen of Eqypt over her evil sister. To make a long story short, Cleopatra and Caesar become infatuated with one another and have a love affair resulting in a child, and this makes Rome very angry, because they feel that Caesar is betraying Rome for Cleopatra. They conspire and assasinate Caesar. Saddened and overwhelmed by Caesar's death, Cleopatra looks for comfort in the arms of Marc Anthony, but instead finds true love. Later, war is declared and they must fight. Cleopatra thinks Anthony is dead and is taken captive by Octavius and his men. Anthony is found, but soon dies, and then to avoid being embarrassed and humiliated by being forced to walk the streets of Rome as a Captive of the Romans, Cleopatra kills herself from a bite of the poisonous Asp. Of course, that is the movie in a nutshell. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out on a lot!
